NC State will play three-straight at home this week, beginning with High Point on Tuesday, Sept. 28. The Wolfpack, 6-1-2 and 1-1-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference action, has not lost to a non-conference opponent this season and has not lost to the Panthers in four previous meetings. High Point is 5-3-0 and 2-0-0 in the Big South and will ride a two-match winning streak into the 7 p.m. kick-off at the SAS Soccer Park in Cary.
Despite the 2-0 loss to Clemson last Friday, the Wolfpack has plenty of things to be happy about. Along with the scoring efforts of NC State's two seniors, the Pack went 5-0-2 against its non-conference opponents heading into Tuesday's match against High Point. Last season NC State took away a 4-0 victory after then freshman Carol Tognetti scored two goals, her first multiple goal game of her career. This season, Anna Helenius leads the squad with 17 points and five assists. She, along with Erin Griswold, leads the team with six goals apiece. And Tognetti isn't far behind with four goals, four assists. In net for NC State is sophomore Megan Connors. She owns a 5-2-1 record on the year, while allowing just five goals in nine games and making 12 saves. The goalkeeper has also recorded two shutouts. Defensively, NC State has held its foes to less than one goal per game and just over six shots per outing. Anchored by tri-captain sophomore Michelle Crocker, NC State will look to keep its undefeated non-conference record in tact.
"High Point has done quite well this year," said NC State head coach Laura Kerrigan. "They've had some good results against quality teams such as Elon and UNC Wilmington. It will be a good match."
High Point will ride a two-game winning streak into its ninth match of the season. The two-straight wins were shutouts as well, as the Panthers tackled VMI to a 5-0 score and took Longwood 2-0. Two freshmen and a junior will lead the Panthers. Midfielder Amy Anzovino has a team-best five goals and 11 points, while goalkeeper Hannah Nail has started all eight matches, made 29 saves and allowed seven goals. High Point is just 1-2 on the road this season, all against non-conference opponents, and has not picked up such a win since the season opener at The Citadel, 4-1.
Also this week, NC State will host No. 2 North Carolina on Thursday, at SAS, 7 p.m., and Virginia Tech on Sunday at Method Road, 1 p.m.
