Durham, N.C. - The NC State men's soccer team lost to Fairleigh Dickinson 1-0 Friday night in the first game of the Adidas Tournament being held at Duke this weekend. Both teams battled back and forth for over 109 minutes of action, but Donny Mayard converted a corner kick with only seven seconds remaining to give FDU the win. The Wolfpack (3-1) lost for the first time this season, and will back in action tomorrow playing Columbia at 5:00 p.m. at Duke.
The decisive goal came with only seven seconds left in the sudden death overtime period. The Knight's Mirza Rusevic lined up for the corner kick, and after the ball bounced once, Mayard capitalized and struck the ball into the NC State goal.
Both teams had a few good scoring chances in the first overtime period. FDU's Antonio Nunziata had a shot on the Pack's goal four minutes in only to be turned away by Jorge Gonzalez. NC State came right back, as Aaron King and El Hadj Cisse both put hard shots on the Knight's goal only to be denied by Elvir Prasovic.
NC State had one goal called back in the second half in the 67th minute. Junior Bryant Salter put a shot on goal only to be redirected by Federico Peria into the FDU net. However, the linesman called Peria for offsides, taking the goal away.
NC State's Jorge Gonzalez finished the day with six saves, including many at point blank range. The Knight's Elvir Prasovic notched three saves for the shutout.
NC State will conclude its weekend in the Duke Adidas Tournament tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. against Columbia.
