NC State women's soccer defeated Howard, 4-0 on Tuesday, Aug. 31, in the home opener. The Wolfpack improved its record to 1-0-1 after a two-goal performance from sophomore Carol Tognetti. Howard fell to 0-2-0 on the year. The Wolfpack played all available players in the shutout win over the visiting Bison, but not until NC State had tallied three goals. The first goal came in the 17th minute after sophomore Christina Mann threaded a pass to senior tri-captain Erin Griswold on the far side. The forward then placed a sharp shot into the top right corner. "Christina gave me a great pass from the midline," said Griswold. "I had a good touch and some open space to score." The Pack managed 11 shots to Howard's one in the first 45 minutes. Dolly Akingbohungbe tallied the lone shot for the Bison. Howard's goalkeeper, Lindsey Walton, collected five saves in the half, many of which came at the feet of Wolfpack senior Anna Helenius. The forward took four shots, including one that caromed off the far post. "Once again we came out stronger in the second half," said NC State head coach Laura Kerrigan. "We had some good opportunities to score in the first half, but were unfortunate in the placement of those. I have to give credit to Howard's keeper as well. In the second half we were more patient and deliberate with our passing and sets." The second half resulted it three goals, including two from Tognetti, within six minutes. The first was an accidental header from Griswold in the box to Tognetti who tipped it in at 54:59. Sophomore Megan Buescher once again used her long throw in to create a scoring opportunity for NC State as she placed it on the head of Tognetti, who once again dashed into the box. The Pack's final goal was awarded to the persistent Helenius, who by the time her goal was scored had racked up seven shots. Freshman Vanessa Wellman turned inside and passed back out to freshman Jessica O'Rourke on the near side who then passed it in to Helenius. Helenius caught off her forehead for her first goal of the season at 68:30. Howard tallied three shots in the period, none on goal. Kyrah Bacote, Allison Smith and Raneika Bean each had one. Walton made four saves in the half despite allowing the three goals. NC State's starting keeper, sophomore Megan Connors saw little action and had to face no shots on goal. Junior Kim Selz entered the game for the last 16 plus minutes and also saw limited action in the net. The Wolfpack will again be at home and at SAS this Friday, Sept. 3. NC State will host Iowa State at 7 p.m. The Cyclones are 1-1-0 on the season and are coming off a 2-0 shutout of Drake on Aug. 29.
