Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State track and field team will be sending four individuals to compete in the 2004 U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials in Sacramento, California, over the span of the next two weeks. The top track and field athletes in the country will be vying for a spot on the Olympic team for this summer's games in Athens, and NC State will have a shot of sending two distance runners and two sprinters to this top event.
For the men's side, distance runners Chad Pearson and Andy Smith will be competing in the trials. Pearson qualified for the 10,000 meters with a top time of 28:37.95 this past track season. Pearson earned All-America honors in that event at the 2004 Outdoor NCAA Championships with his fifth place finish, and he is also the NC State school record holder. Smith will be running in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Smith brought home a second place finish at the 2004 Outdoor NCAA Championships, and he was earned All-America honors and was the ACC Champion each of the past two years.
The finals of the 10,000 meters will be run Friday night, while the premlims of the 3,000 meter steeplechase start on Monday.
On the women's side, sprinters Felicia Fant and Ebony Foster will each be running as well. Fant will compete in the 100 meters. She recently finished 17th at the 2004 Outdoor NCAA Championships, and was second at the ACCs this year and the ACC Champion in 2003. Foster will be running in the 100 meter hurdles. Foster win the ACC Championship this past outdoor season in that event, and was 10th at the NCAA Championships.
The prelims of the 100 meter start Friday, and the prelims for the 100 meter hurdles start next weekend.
