NC State's Michael Rogers, who became the first player in school history to be named ACC Pitcher of the Week five times, was taken in the 2nd round (49th pick overall) of today's baseball draft by the Oakland Athletics. The redshirt sophomore becomes the highest draft pick out of NC State since Corey Lee was selected in the first round by Texas in 1996.
Rogers' stellar season included a complete game three-hit shutout over then No. 1 ranked Texas in the first game of a double-header back on May 15. The Wolfpack went on to win that contest 2-0 before completing another shutout win behind Vern Sterry.
Although he was pounded by powerful Miami in the NCAA regionals on Saturday, the redshirt sophomore still finished with a 9-4 record and a 3.04 ERA.
Featuring pinpoint control, Rogers posted 110 strikeouts compared to just 21 walks in 117 innings pitched. Opposing hitters batted just .209 against him. Rogers has two years of college eligibility remaining.
The decision to return for his senior certainly paid off for Sterry, who was later selected by San Diego in the 8th round on Monday. Sterry, who was 9-2 with a 2.20 ERA this season, jumped eight rounds after being chosen by Oakland in round 16 last year.
Erik Cordier, a high school pitcher from Wisconsin who has signed with NC State, joined Rogers in the second round and was selected 63rd overall by Kansas City.
