Nancy Mountcastle, a rising sophomore on the NC State women's golf team was one of three current Wolfpack golfers to qualify for match play at the North and South Women's Amateur Championship Tuesday. The Durham, N.C. native is coming off a strong finish at the Women's Eastern Amateur Championship last week at Bayville Golf Club in Virginia Beach, Va., where she tied for 13th place.
Following up a pair of 75s in the first two rounds, Mountcastle fired a 77 on the final day of the Eastern Amateur. She then shot par in the first qualifying round of the North-South Monday at Pinehurst No. 8. Despite finishing 10-over in the second qualify round Tuesday at Pinehurst No. 2, Mountcastle tied for 46th, making the cut for match play, which begins Wednesday. The top 63 from the 36-hole qualifying rounds, plus the defending champion will hold a six-round single elimination match play tournament.
Mountcastle joins teammates Leslie Stubblefield and Lorraine Ballerano, as well as former teammates Briana Vega and Courtney Pomeranz in the field of 64 at the North and South Amateur Championship. Pomeranz, who shot one-under at No. 8 in the first round, tied for 12th in the qualifying rounds, carding a four-over score. Vega, who finished second last week at a sectional qualifier to qualify for the U.S. Women's Open, wrapped up the North-South qualifying rounds five-over and tied for 19th, advancing to match play. Ballerano shot nine over in the qualifying rounds, is tied for 40th and advances to match play along with Stubblefield, who tied for 44th at nine-over.
