Briana Vega, a senior on the NC State women's golf team this past season, qualified for the U.S. Women's Open Thursday. The North Andover, Mass., native who has led the Wolfpack the past two seasons finished second at the Sectional Qualifier at Williamsburg Country Club in Williamsburg, Va., with a 36-hole score of 143. Vega, still an amatuer, finished ahead of professional players Lynnette Brooky and Anne-Marie Knight.
On May 25, Vega shot a 74 in the local qualifier at Crestview Country Club in Agawam, Mass., to advance to the sectional qualifier. With her runner-up finish at the sectional qualifier, she will now play in the 2004 U.S. Women's Open, July 1-4 at Orchards Golf Course in South Hadley, Mass.
The U.S. Women's Open will be nationally televised, teeing off with a preview from 12:30-1:00 p.m. (EDT) on Wednesday, June 30, shown on ESPN. ESPN will carry the first two rounds, July 1 and 2, from 2-6 p.m. and NBC will broadcast the last two rounds, July 3 and 4 from 3-6 p.m.
