Foster , Fant and Roth Advance to NCAA Championships

Gainesville, Fla. - The NC State track & field team competed at the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track & Field East Regional Championships this past weekend at Florida. The top five athletes in each event, and top three relay teams, all automatically advance to the NCAA Championship meet at Texas June 9-12. NC State already had two runners qualifying for the 10,00 meters earlier this season, and this weekend the Pack added 5 more athletes to the NCAA field.
Both Ebony Foster and Felicia Fant advanced for NC State in the women's sprints. Foster finished second in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 13.04, while Fant took third in the 100 meters with her time of 11.47. Both will compete in those two events at the NCAA Championships. Kristina Roth also will advance to the NCAA Championships. She took fourth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 10:18.33. NC State also placed two other runners in the top-10 in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with Lucinda Hull placing seventh (10:20.71) and Claudin Hull was ninth (10:34.68). Foster and Fant also ran in the 200 meters, with Foster placing 10th with her time of 23.67 and Fant was 16th in 23.97. Foster and Fant also team with freshmen Courtney Patterson and Joya Rodgers to place seventh in the finals of the 4x100 meter relay, with the Pack running a 45.14. In the 5,000 meters, it was Renee Gunning in eighth place with a time of 16:37.15, closely followed by Julia Lucas in 10th place with her time of 16:42.16. Josianne Lauber also ran in that race, taking 24th (17:00.93). Kelly Smoke registered a foul in the discus.
Senior James Rowell won the men's discus and will advance to the NCAA Championships. His throw of 190'07" also set a new school record, one that stood since 1983. Also claiming a title at the regionals was Andy Smith in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with his time of 8:42.94. Both Rowell and Smith will head to Texas. Freshman Bobby Mack just missed an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships in the 5,000 meters as he ran a 14:25.84 for sixth place, just 0.03 seconds out of fifth. Classmate Mitchell Pope took 12th in the shot put with his toss of 56'01". Eric Hoverstad also came home with a 12th place showing, with his in the pole vault by clearing 16'05.25". Monterrio Adams finished 24th in the 400 meters with a time of 48.20.
