CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Mike Daniel doubled home the go-ahead run, and Robert Woodard pitched four solid innings to propel North Carolina past NC State 5-4 in the final game of a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series at Boshamer Stadium. With the Win, UNC averted a possible series sweep by the Wolfpack, which fell to 34-20 overall and 11-12 in the conference. UNC improved to 38-17 overall and 14-10 in the ACC.
Woodard (7-2), who came on in relief when freshman Andrew Miller had to be lifted because of wildness, went four innings and allowed just one run on one hit, a home run by Mike Jensen on Woodard's second pitch of the game. He retired the next 12 men in order, striking out five. Michael Gross worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning for hiks seventh save. Joey Devine (0-2) took the loss after allowing three runs on four hits in 3 1/3 innings. Devine walked three and struck out five.
North Carolina took its first lead in the series with a run in the bottom of the second. Marshall Hubbard led off with a double into the gap in left-center, went to third on a groundout, and scored on Chase Younts' two-out opposite-field double into the left-field corner.
Bryan Steed led off the bottom of the third with a walk and went to third when Greg Mangum singled to right. Jay Cox hit a grounder to first base, but David Hicks nailed Steed attempting to score on the play for the first out of the inning. Chris Ianetta flied to shallow center field, but Hubbard lined a single to center to drive in Mangum and make it 2-0. Matt Camp, starting in center field, alertly threw to third base to nail Cox for the final out of the inning.
The Pack got to Miller for a run in the top of the fourth. Jensen singled to left for NC State's first hit of the afternoon, and Taylor was hit by a pitch for the second time in as many trips to the plate. Dustin Knight grounded into a force play, but Jake Muyco walked to load the bases. Tim Holt lined a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Taylor and cut the lead to 2-1. After Jonathan Diaz walked to load the bases again, Camp lined out to left for the final out of the inning.
The Wolfpack knocked Miller from the game with a big fifth inning. Johnson led off with a walk and went to third on Hicks's double to left-center. That was it for Miller, who gave up three runs on two hits, five walks and two hit batters. He struck out three. Woodard came on in relief and immediately served up a three-run blast to Jensen, putting NC State in front 4-2. North Carolina tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the inning on solo homers from Greg Mangum and Chris Ianetta against Devine.
After the giving up the two home runs, Devine rolled through the sixth and seventh innings, but finally gave out of steam in the eighth. With one down, Devine walked Sammy Hewitt, and Mike Daniel came up next and stroked an RBI double to the wall in straightaway center field, giving the Tar Heels a 5-4 lead.
