RALEIGH, N.C. - Micah Owings pitched into the eighth inning and had two hits and an RBI at the plate to lead Georgia Tech to a 6-1 victory over NC State on Sunday in the first game of a doubleheader at Doak Field. The Yellow Jackets improved to 26-17 overall and 8-5 in the ACC with the victory, while the Wolfpack dropped to 28-17 and 9-10 with the loss.
Owings (6-2) allowed one run on five hits in seven-plus innings. He walked two and struck out eight. NC State starter Michael Rogers (6-3) allowed three runs on four hits in five innings. He walked two and struck out four.
Owings and Rogers traded zeroes on the scoreboard for the first three innings, but Owings not only got both of Tech's first two hits, he drove in the first run of the game with a two-out single in the top of the fourth. Steven Blackwood got the mini-rally started with a nine-pitch, two-out walk. Owings then worked the count full before delivering a single into center field to give the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead.
The Yellow Jackets had another two-out rally in the top of the fifth. Clifton Remole led off with a walk and went to second on a passed ball. Rogers retired Mike Nickeas and Wes Hodges on fly balls, but Whit Robbins ripped a double to right-center to score Remole, and Eric Patterson followed with an RBI single to right, driving in Robbins and giving Owings and the Yellow Jackets a 3-0 lead.
Rogers was gone after five. Lefty Nate Cretarolo came in to start the sixth inning, and after recording two easy outs, Cretarolo gave up a single to left by Brandon Boggs and a two-run homer to right by Remole, pushing the Wolfpack into a 5-0 hole.
The Jackets picked up an unearned run in the top of the eighth to make it 6-0 when Boggs walked with one out, went to second on a single to left by Remole, and scored when Joey Devine booted Nickeas's grounder to third for an error.
The Wolfpack broke up the shutout in the bottom of the eighth. Bryan Kinneberg led off with a triple off the wall in right field, and scored on Matt Camp's squeeze bunt, which Camp beat out for a single. Pinch-hitter Conor Clougherty reached on an infield single, but reliever Nick Wagner got David Hicks to ground into a force play and Mike Jensen to hit into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.
