RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State men's golf coach Richard Sykes announced today the signing of Andrew Byrd to a letter of commitment to play for the Wolfpack this fall. Byrd, who hails from Oxford, N.C., is graduating from Kerr-Vance Academy in Henderson, N.C., on May 29th. He has had a solid junior career and looks to have a promising collegiate career after finishing ahead of numerous tour players and some of the top players in the ACC at the Local Qualifying Round for the 2004 U.S. Open, May 12 at River Landing Golf Club in Wallace, N.C., where Byrd qualified for the sectional qualitying tournament with a second place score of 67.
Byrd was one of eight golfers to qualify from his local qualifying round; ahead of a highly talented list of non-qualifiers that include touring pro Michael Henderson, Duke's top player, Ryan Blaum, highly-ranked junior player and Wake Forest signee, Webb Simpson, North Carolina's only four-time All-ACC golfer, Dustin Bray, former NC State All-Americans Garth Mulroy and Chris Mundorf, as well as Ryder Cup member Ken Green.
