CARY, N.C. - NC State (288-290=578) is in fifth place at the Courtyard by Marriott Intercollegiate after two rounds at MacGregor Downs Country Club in Cary, N.C. The tournament features some of the top teams and individuals in the country, including the country's number one player, Bill Haas of Wake Forest. Haas fired a 64-69=133 to take the individual lead heading into the final round. The 64 tied the MacGregor Downs CC course record set by Kelly Mitchum, a four time All-American for NC State.
The Kansas Jayhawks took the team lead heading into the final round, posting a tournament low 279 in the days second round for a team score of 562 (-14). The Jayhawks are followed by Duke (565), Minnesota (575), Wake Forest (577), NC State and SMU (578) in the top five.
The top five individuals are Haas, Aron Price (GSU; 64-69=133) and Kevin Ward (KU; 70-66=136), followed by four players at 139. NC State's Fernando Mechereffe is in eighth place with an impressive 70-71=141, only five strokes out of second place.
Other Wolfpack golfers that contributed to NC State's fifth place showing through two rounds were: Jerry Richardson (71-76=147; t-27), Stephen Lewton (73-74=147; t-27), Garry Hill (79-69=148; t-31) and Banks Wood (74-78=152; t-63).
Play continues on Saturday, April 10 with tee times on the first and 10th holes beginning at 8 am and running until 9:52 am. Admission is free, and there will be a awards ceremony after the final round is completed.
