NC State head volleyball coach Mary Byrne announced the addition of Fiona MacPherson to her assistant coaching staff. MacPherson, most recently, was the assistant coach at Division II Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida. While with the Fighting Knights program, MacPherson assisted both the head coach and players with every day activities. She also created practice and game plans, scouted opponents, as well as working with players on their defensive strategy and hitting techniques.
"I'm very excited to have Fiona on board as a member of our coaching staff," said Byrne. "She has coaching experience at many levels, not to mention her knowledge of the game she gained as a player. With the new season approaching quickly, I am happy to have Fiona as a member of our Wolfpack family and I think she will definitely help us achieve our goals for the 2004 season."
A graduate of Elon University with a B.S. in Leisure/Sport Management and a Minor in Business Administration, MacPherson initially took a job with a marketing firm out of college, while also coaching club volleyball. Afterwards, MacPherson returned to her alma mater to serve as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator before heading to Lynn.
At Elon, her primary responsibilities included technical training of defensive players, team conditioning, scouting of opponents and the recruitment of promising student-athletes. MacPherson's job, however, became a little more intense during the spring of 2003 due to the school's search for a new head coach. During that time, MacPherson helped maintain the program by running practices and coaching the team to a 12-8 record during spring tournaments at Wake Forest and UNC-Greensboro.
A four-year varsity letter winner and three-year starter as an outside hitter at Elon, MacPherson helped lead the Phoenix through its transition from Division II into Division I as a member of the Big South Conference. Playing from 1995-98, she was named captain during her senior year, and went on to earn both MVP and conference honors at the end of the season. MacPherson also received numerous tournament awards throughout her stint at Elon. For her career, she broke the 1,000 career mark in both kills and digs. During November of 1996, she was named the AVCA Division II National Player of the Week, and later helped lead her team to the 1996 South Atlantic Conference championship.
MacPherson's coaching experience also stretches to the club and camp levels as well. She was the head coach for the Cobb Atlanta Juniors 14-elite club team in December of 1999 through May of 2001. During the summers of 2001 and 2002, MacPherson served as Associate Director and court coach for Elon's volleyball camps, and has participated as court coach at several other camps, including ones held by Furman, Duke, Emory and Eckerd College.
