Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State track and field team got in one final meet before next weekend's Outdoor ACC Championships, by competing in the Carolina Fast Times Invitational at UNC this past weekend. The women's team had a strong day in the 1,500 meters, recording four top-10 spots, and in the throws. The men's team also did well in the throw.
Kristin Price won the 1,500 meters with a NCAA Regional time of 4:26.69. Also in the top-10 in that race were Renee Gunning in fifth (4:35.85), Kristina Roth in eighth (4:43.85), and Michele Popple in ninth (4:44.77). Leslie Jimison was 12th in that race (4:5.08). Erin Swain finished second in the 3,000 meters running a 10:07.63. Also in the 3,000 meters, Ginger Wheeler was third (10:17.04) and Amy Arnold was fifth (10:29.80). Georgia Davis was 13th in the 800 meters (2:20.17).
Both Kelly Smoke and Brie Ward had a busy day in the throws, with Smoke competing in four events and Ward in three. Smoke won the shot put and finished third in each of her other events. Smoke's top mark in the shot put was 45'07.75", while she also finished third in the discus (149'07"), the hammer (165'11"), and the javelin (106'03"). Ward had a fourth place finish in the shot put (37'08"), was fifth in the hammer (139'03"), and eighth in the discus (120'01"). Also in the javelin, Nikki Hall placed fourth (101'04").
In the high jump, both Laila Thomas and Jonann Jackson each cleared 5'04.25" and tied for fourth. Thomas also placed 10th in the long jump with a top mark of 16'08.50". In the triple jump, Desiree Mittman was fourth (37'11.25"). In the pole vault, Teresa Reed brought home a seventh place showing (11'09.75"), and Tabitha Woodard was ninth (10'04").
On the men's side, Mitchell Pope had a strong day in the throws with one first place showing and two second place finishes. Pope won the shot put with a NCAA Regional mark of 56'09.25". He was also second in both the discus (143'00") and the hammer (165'10"). Also in the throws, Chris Crawford was second in the shot put (47'06.50"), third in the hammer (142'01"), and 10th in the discus (98'05").
Freshman Bobby Mack won the men's 3,000 meters with his time of 8:26.19, while classmate Stephen Furst was fourth in that race (8:48.04). Antwan Graves brought home fourth place in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.25, and he was also fifth in the 200 meters (22.68). Matt Minnick was 12th in the 100 meters (11.28) and 10th in the 200 meters (23.12). In the 400 hurdles, it was Kevin Davis in sixth (55.32) and Jeff Baird in 10th (58.04). Sajid Reshamwala was 15th in the 800 meters (1:58.61), and Phillip Stafford took 13th in the 1,500 meters (4:06.92).
