Gymnastics Set to Host NCAA Regional

Raleigh, N.C. - For the 12th time in the past 13 years, the NC State gymnastics team will compete in the NCAA Regional Championships. This year the Pack will host the 2004 Southeast Regional Gymnastics Championships in Reynolds Coliseum, the first time NC State will host the NCAA Regionals. The Wolfpack, seeded fifth, will face No. 1 seed and top-ranked UCLA, No. 2 seed and 12th-ranked North Carolina, No. 3 seed and 13th-ranked Nebraska, No. 4 seed and 21st-ranked West Virginia, and No. 6 seed Maryland.
The meet will be held this Saturday starting at 6:00 p.m. in Reynolds Coliseum. Live updates will be provided at the end of each rotation at www.netscore.com/Meets.
NC State will start with a bye during the first rotation. NC State will be up first on floor, then mover over to vault. After its second bye, the Wolfpack will finish the meet on bars then beam. In the first rotation, Maryland will be on vault, Nebraska on bars, UCLA on beam, and West Virginia on floor. NCSU and North Carolina will both have byes.
NC State Looks For Bid to NCAA Championships: For the 12th time in the past 13 years, the NC State gymnastics team will compete at the NCAA Regional Championships. This year the Pack will host the 2004 Southeast Regional Gymnastics Championships in Reynolds Coliseum, the first time NC State will host the NCAA Regionals. The Wolfpack, seeded fifth, will face No. 1 seed and top-ranked UCLA, No. 2 seed and 12th-ranked North Carolina, No. 3 seed and 13th-ranked Nebraska, No. 4 seed and 21st-ranked West Virginia, and No. 6 seed Maryland.
The Pack holds a 3-8 record against teams this season competing in the NCAA Regionals in Raleigh, all meets against EAGL conference foes. NCSU is 0-5 against UNC this year, WVU holds a 2-1 record, and the Pack beat Maryland in two of three meets. NC State is 0-4 all-time against Nebraska, and has only competed against UCLA at the 1998 NCAA Championships.
Recent NCAA Regional Championships: Last season NC State traveled to Athens, Ga., to take part in the 2003 NCAA Regionals. The Wolfpack finished sixth with a team score of 193.575, its third highest team score at the NCAA Regionals in school history.
NC State did not qualify for the NCAA Regionals in 2002, the first time since 1991. In 2001, NC State went to Florida and finished sixth that day with a team score of 193.500.
In 2000, NC State received the No. 3 seed, after finishing the regular season ranked No. 13 in the country, and traveled to Athens, Ga. NC State finished fifth with a team score of 193.475. That meet ended the Pack's most successful year in school history.
The Pack rallied from sixth place after two rotations to finish third in 1999, but fell just three-tenths short of earning a second consecutive bid to the NCAA Championships. Amy Langendorf qualified for the NCAA Championships after placing second in the all-around.
With a score of 195.125 for third, the 1998 team earned its first ever invitation to the NCAA Championships. The Pack would go on to finish 11th overall.
Wolfpack in the Rankings: NC State is ranked No. 22 in the www.troester.com poll this week, after spending most of the season in the top-25. The Pack has a RQS of 196.515. NC State is currently ranked No. 20 nationally on bars with a RQS of 49.200, and is 21st nationally on vault (49.135). The Pack is also ranked 29th on both beam (49.065) and floor (49.310).
Five Make All-EAGL Squads: A total of five NC State gymnasts were honored by the EAGL on the conference's All-EAGL squads. The Wolfpack had a first team selection on both vault and bars, while four other gymnasts represented five spots on the second teams for beam, floor and the all-around. In addition, senior Marlyn Madey was named the Scholar-Athlete Award winner.
Madey is a second year student in grad school. She has a perfect 4.0 GPA while pursuing her Master's degree in Public Administration. In addition to her scholar athlete award, Madey also was honored for her contributions as an athlete. For the second straight season, Madey was named All-EAGL first-team on bars. This season she was also named All-EAGL second-team for the all-around, this being the first year she has competed in the all-around.
Another NC State gymnast competing in the all-around for the first time in her career, sophomore Kylah Bachman, was also named to the All-EAGL second-team in the all-around. Bachman also earned a spot on the All-EAGL second-team for floor.
Freshman Rachel Katz was named to the All-EAGL first-team for vault. Katz has been the Pack's top performer on vault all season, winning four titles, including three of the last four meets, and notching a team-high score of 9.95.
Finally, the duo of senior Leah Sabo and junior Cori Goldstein were also honored. Sabo was named to the All-EAGL second-team for beam, after earning that same honor on floor and the all-around last season. Goldstein was named to the All-EAGL second-team on floor, the third straight year she has done so.
Katz Named EAGL Specialist of the Week: Freshman Rachel Katz was named EAGL Specialist of the Week for her performance in the Wolfpack Invitational. Katz was the only freshman in the EAGL to win such honors.
Competing in three events at the Hearts Invite, Katz earned the first two 9.90 scores of her career. She earned her first career title on vault when she tied for first with a 9.9 score. On floor, her 9.9 score earned her a tie for sixth. She also tied for seventh on bars with a 9.825 score.
Madey Competing in All-Around: Senior Marlyn Madey returned to the NC State gymnastics team for a fifth season, she missed her first two years here recovery from foot surgery, and the Wolfpack could not have been happier with her results this season. Madey was named to the All-EAGL first-team for bars for the second straight season, and also named All-EAGL second-team for the all-around. She competed on vault and in the all-around for the first time in her career, Competing in the all-around in the last seven meets of the season, never scoring below a 39.075
She won the all-around title twice, and has eight event titles. She notched a personal-best 39.525 in the all-around at Maryland, the third-best score in school history. She finished 10th in the all-around at EAGL Championships (39.225). Her best event was bars, having won five of the last seven meets, the other finishes were second and fifth. She has scored at least a 9.9 on bars in each of the last five meets, and six of the last seven. On the other three events, she set new a personal-best in vault (9.875), beam (9.925), and floor (9.9). In addition to her fine performance as a gymnast, Madey was named the 2004 EAGL Scholar-Athlete Award winner.
Bachman Also Sees First Action in All-Around: Sophomore Kylah Bachman had a very good rookie season last year, being named to the All-EAGL first-team for beam and was the only freshman to see significant action. This year has been even better for Bachman, not only has she competed in the all-around for the first time, she was named All-EAGL second-team for both the all-around and floor.
Bachman set new career-highs in every event, winning one all-around title, and one event title on bars and beam. She scored over a 39.000 in the all-around in seven of the 11 meets she competed in the all-around, with a career-best 39.500, fourth best in school history, at Maryland, then the next week won all-around against New Hampshire/Yale (39.225). She is the only gymnast in NC State history to score a 9.975 on beam, did so against George Washington.
Freshmen in Action: For the second straight season, NC State has had one of its top gymnasts being a freshman. This year Rachel Katz has been in the Pack's vault and bars line-up from day one, and has also competed on floor in the last seven meets. She was twice honored by the EAGL, named to the All-EAGL first-team for vault, and named EAGL Specialist of the Week after her performance in the Hearts Invitational this past season. She has won four vault titles, and finished in the top-five in 12 of the 13 meets. She has been even better recently, scoring at least a 9.9 on vault in five meets, including the last three in a row. She scored a 9.9 for seventh at the EAGL Championships, and in the two meets prior top that won vault with a 9.9 in back-to-back meets against New Hampshire/Yale and at Maryland. Her Career-best of 9.95 on vault came at North Carolina. Her top score on bars was a 9.9 for second against New Hampshire/Yale, and she scored a 9.9 on floor in the Hearts Invite, the very first time she competed on floor
Also seeing time as a rookie this season has been Amanda Jones. Jones missed time at the beginning of the season with a back injury, and missed the EAGL Championships after falling on bars during warm-ups, but she Had been in the beam line-up in nine straight meets before missing the EAGL Championships She has seen action in four meets on both vault and floor , competing in the all-around once as well as on bars. Jones has four finishes in the top-five on beam, scoring a personal-best 9.85 three times on beam.
Seniors Last Go Around: In addition to Madey, NC State has four other gymnasts who have seen significant action throughout the season: Alison Bundy, Molly Pennington, Cheryl Potacco and Leah Sabo. * Alison Bundy has competed on floor in every meet this season , scoring no lower then a 9.85 in each of the past seven meets. She recently scored a career-best 9.9 in three straight meets, Hearts Invite, at North Carolina, and against George Washington. She earned her first career title against George Washington. * Molly Pennington has been bothered all season with a back injury, but has missed only two meets. She started the season off strong winning the vault title in the first two meets of the season. She tied her personal-best of 9.925 at Pittsburgh, and scored a 9.875 for a 10th place showing at the EAGL Championships. * Cheryl Potacco has competed on vault and bars this season, doing both events in each of the last seven meets. She set a new personal-best of 9.9 on bars for a second place finish on her Senior Night. She also had scores of 9.825 on both vault (17th place) and bars (18th) at the EAGL Championships. * Leah Sabo was named to the All-EAGL second-team on both all-around and the beam this season. Her top score was a 39.225 at Iowa for a second place showing. Sabo also Finished second at the EAGL Championships on bars with a 9.9, and set career-highs on both vault (9.85 - at Pittsburgh) and on beam (9.925 - Wolfpack Invite) this season.
Goldstein Again Constent: Every meet there are those gymnasts you know you can count on to go out and hit their routines, and for the third straight year NC State has exactly that in junior Cori Goldstein. She has competed on both beam and floor in every meet this season but one, always being on of the last two up on both events. She was named to the All-EAGL second-team on floor for the third straight season.
During the course of the year, she had nine top-five finishes on floor and four on beam , only scoring under a 9.85 on floor twice this season. Goldstein tied her personal-best of 9.95 on floor in the Wolfpack Invite, and set a new personal-best of 9.925 on beam against George Washington.
Petrocelli Back in Action: After missing most of last season with a knee injury, she only competed in one meet, junior Andrea Petrocelli has returned to the Wolfpack line-up and made a significant impact. she Competed on bars and beam in every meet this season. She started the season strong by winning beam in back-to-back meets with a 9.825 against Brown/William & Mary and at Pittsburgh. She had four scores of 9.825 on beam to start the season, and was NC State's top finisher on beam in five of the Pack's first six meets. She tied her personal-best of 9.875 on beam against George Washington and at the Governor's Cup
In addition to her good work on beam, Petrocelli competed on bars for the first time in her career. She scored a season-best of 9.85 in the Wolfpack Invite.
Pack Places 13 on All-Academic Team: Thirteen members of the NC State gymnastics team were named to the EAGL All-Academic team, announced by the league office. Of the 88 gymnasts, 10 are seniors who were named to the EAGL All-Academic Team for the fourth year in a row. Mary Freyvogel of North Carolina State was honored for the fourth consecutive year, and Marlyn Madey was named for a fifth straight year, as she is currently in grad school in her fifth season.

Topping Out: A total of seven different NC State gymnasts have combined to share or win 26 events thus far this season. Senior Marlyn Madey leads the way with 10 overall titles, and leads with with the most on a single event with five on bars.
