Charlottesville, VA - NC State clinched the 2004 Hoo's Who Tournament Championship with two victories on Sunday, while improving to 21-17 on the season.
Freshman Shaina Ervin began the day in the circle for the Wolfpack, throwing a brilliant no-hitter against Binghamton and earning her fifth win of the season. Ervin would compile an impressive twelve strikeouts while giving up just three walks. Ervin's pitching kept all Binghamton batters from hitting any balls out of the infield for the entire game. In addition, Binghamton saw no runners advanced to second base. Freshman Jennifer Chamberlin drilled a two-run homer to right center in the Pack's 4-0 victory. Chamberlin's home run was her team-leading 8th for the season.
In the championship game, the Wolfpack squared off against the hosting Virginia Cavaliers, who had handed NC State their only loss of the tournament on the first day of competition. In arguably the most memorable game in the short history of NC State softball, fans in attendance saw the Wolfpack and the Cavaliers battle blow by blow through an amazing ten innings. In the top of the tenth inning, with tie-breaking rules in place, freshman Rene? LaCroix advanced to third on a sacrifice from freshman Heather Jedrey. Freshman Jennifer Patterson then delivered a pinch-hit single to center field, driving in LaCroix to give the Wolfpack the eventual game winning run. Freshman Abbie Sims pitched all ten innings for the Pack and collected her 15th win of the season in the 3-2 victory.
NC State softball will resume action on Thursday at Buies Creek as they travel to take on the Fighting Camels of Campbell University. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
