CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - 2004 Hoo's Who Tournament * March 26-28, 2004 * Charlottesville, Va. NC State travels to Charlottesville, Va. for its last tournament of the season, the 2004 Hoo's Who Tournament. On Friday, March 26 the Wolfpack will play Penn State (9-16) at 1:00 pm and face Virginia (19-16) at 3:00 pm. Play continues on Saturday with Seton Hall (14-4) and NC State at 9:00 am and Binghamton (7-4-1) at 1:00 pm. Championship play begins on Sunday at 10:00 am.
Last At-Bat NC State posted a 5-2 mark at the Buzz Classic and has won 12 games in tournaments this season, and is 16-16 overall. NC State has won nine of its last 12 contests and had a streak of five straight wins at the Buzz Classic. With its 16-16 mark, the Wolfpack is currently fifth in the ACC.
On Deck The Wolfpack will return home to host Radford in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 3. The first game will start at 1:00 pm with a second contest roughly 30 minutes following. NC State will then travel to UNC-Greensboro for a doubleheader on March 7.
Power Ball NC State has hit eight homeruns in the eight home games at Walnut Creek this year. In the first game against Charleston Southern, NC State hit three homeruns. Overall, NC State has hit 16 homeruns, with third baseman Jennifer Chamberlin leading the team with six long balls.
Chamberlin's Offensive Numbers Power Pack Freshman Jennifer Chamberlin is swinging a hot bat for NC State, as she has hit her way into third place in average with a .297 mark. Even more impressive is her slugging percentage, as she is hitting a team high .538, and leads the team with 13 RBIs. Her team-high six homeruns and four doubles give her the lead in extra base hits, and she is second on the team in runs and hits.
In the ACC, Chamberlin is third in homeruns and tenth in slugging percentage; the only freshman in the top-10 in homeruns and one of only three freshman to be ranked in slugging percentage.
Gelbard Gets Consistent Heather Gelbard is the team leader in hits (35), average (.337) and doubles, and is ranked in the top-10 in the ACC in each of the three categories. What may go over looked is her defense, as she started most of the year at third before moving to second base to shore up the middle infield. In fact, since her move to second, NC State has gone 12-7 after going 3-8 in her games at third to start the season. Her fielding percentage of .958 is tops among the teams middle infielders and the teams other third baseman, Chamberlin.
Sims-Sational Abbie Sims has made a name for herself as one of the top players in the ACC -- and she's only a freshman. Sims is ninth in the conference in ERA, fifth in wins, sixth in innings pitched, fifth in strikeouts, fifth in shutouts, fourth in complete games and sixth in opponents batting average. Sims leads the team in strikeouts, wins, ERA and oppt. batting average. She leads the teams in runs with 14, and is tied for second in homeruns with two. Her five doubles is also second on the team, and her 14 walks is a third on the team. When not pitching Sims is the teams starting centerfielder.
Sister, Sister It's not double vision. It's twins. Freshmen Miranda and Shaina Ervin are twins. Miranda will wear No. 11, while Shaina wears No. 12. Miranda catches for Shaina. The two led Charlotte's Hopewell HS to two-straight 4-A state championships. The two shared the Championship MVP title and Shaina became the first player to be honored with the MVP award in both seasons. In her 48 innings pitched, she had 82 strikeouts and two no-hitters. Miranda went 12-21 with nine RBI during the tournament, which included a 5-6 at bat and seven RBI in the last two games.
Wolfpack Makes Six Prior to this season, the ACC had just five teams including Florida State, Georgia Tech, Maryland, North Carolina and Virginia. NC State's addition made it an even six. After the ACC expands, the conference will add Virginia Tech softball to the fray next season, and in 2005-06 Boston College will join the conference.
Softball Home Games at Walnut Creek NC State will play all of its home games at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex for the 2004 season. The Wolfpack will host Radford in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 3 in the next home game for the Wolfpack.
