CHARLESTON, S.C. - Michael Rogers threw a three-hitter, and NC State parlayed a pair of Citadel errors, two passed balls, a wild pitch and two hits into three runs to defeat the Bulldogs 3-1 Saturday at Riley Park. The win left the Wolfpack undefeated through five games. The Bulldogs dropped to 2-3 with the defeat.
For the second time in three starts, Rogers (2-0) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before yielding his first hit, a one-out chopper through the box and up the middle by Citadel catcher Will Coker. Aside from that, Rogers retired the Bulldogs in order, 1-2-3, every inning heading into the ninth, when The Citadel averted the shutout with a two-out rally. Rogers, who faced just three men above the minimum, did not issue a walk and struck out 11. He threw 95 pitches.
Bulldogs starter Jonathan Ellis (1-2) couldn't have pitched much better and still lost. He worked eight innings and allowed just two runs, both unearned, on three hits. He walked three and struck out 10.
The Wolfpack scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the third to take an early 2-0 lead. Jake Muyco led off and reached on an error by second baseman Jon Aughey, and Jonathan Diaz walked. A passed ball moved the runners to second and third with none out, and Matt Camp's roller through the right side drove in Muyco with the first run. After Jason St. Julien struck out, Bobby Hubbard lifted a run-scoring fly ball to left to bring in Diaz with the second run of the inning.
David Hicks led off the top of the ninth with an opposite-field double to left and went to third on a passed ball. Ryan Johnson walked and took second on a wild pitch to put runners at second and third with none out. After Joey Devine fouled out, Marc Maynor grounded to shortstop to drive in Hicks and give Rogers a 3-0 lead.
With two away in the bottom of the ninth and Rogers an out away from a one-hit shutout, Aughey singled up the middle and Josh Stackley drove a double to the gap in left-center, scoring Aughey with The Citadel's lone run. Rogers recovered and got Chris Ard to pop up for the final out of the game.
NC State will return to action on Sunday, February 29 here at Riley Park with a doubleheader against College of Charleston. The first game will start at 11 a.m.
