CHARLESTON, S.C. - Vern Sterry pitched seven strong innings and five different NC State players drove in runs to lead the Wolfpack past College of Charleston 7-2 in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday at Riley Park.
NC State improved to 7-0 with the win, while the College of Charleston dropped to 5-3. Sterry (2-0) allowed two runs on 10 hits, walked none and struck out eight in winning his 13th consecutive game. That ties the school record, set from 1984-86 by lefthander Robert Toth. Cougars starter Kevin Bulger (1-1) took the loss after allowing six runs, two of them earned, on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings. He walked none and struck out one.
he Cougars scored both of their runs in the top of the first inning. Bryon Barber singled with one out and Mark Lyons doubled to left to put runners at second and third. Barber scored on Brett Anderson's infield single, and Lyons came in on Jess Easterling's sacrifice fly to left field.
The Wolfpack came back to take the lead thanks to some slipshod defensive play by the Cougars. Matt Camp led off with a single, went to second on a wild pitch, and took third on a groundout. Dusitn Knight singled up the middle to drive in Camp. With two down, the calamity started for College of Charleston. Lee Mezistrano reached on an error by third baseman Jess Easterling, and Bobby Hubbard was safe on another error, this one by shortstop Steve Friend, allowing Knight to score. That left runners on the corners, and Marc Maynor singled to left to drive in Mezistrano and make it 3-2. Second baseman Chris Campbell then dropped a pop fly by Caleb Mangum for another error, the third of the inning, allowing Hubbard to score and give the Pack a 4-2 lead after one inning.
NC State made it 5-2 with another unearned run in the bottom of the third. Hubbard reached on an error by Friend, and was forced on a grounder by Maynor, who beat the relay throw to first and stole second base. Caleb Mangum's first college hit, a single to center field, drove in Maynor.
Jason St. Julien led off the bottom of the fourth with an infield single and went to second on a groundout. David Hicks doubled into the right-field corner to score St. Julien and make it 6-2. Camp led off the bottom of the sixth with a walk and St. Julien was hit by a pitch. Camp went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Knight's sacrifice fly to right to give NC State a 7-2 lead.
The Wolfpack will return to action at Doak Field this week with games against Le Moyne on Tuesday and Wednesday. Game time for both games is 3 p.m.
