Virginia's Steve Hromada managed an important reversal in the final seconds to record a 7-6 decision at 133 pounds over Garrett Cummings, giving the Cavaliers a 22-21 victory over NC State Saturday afternoon in an Atlantic Coast Conference wrestling match at Reynolds Coliseum. Saturday also marked senior day for the Wolfpack, as four wrestlers: Shawn Brookshire, Jake Giamoni, Dustin Kawa and Scott Garren, were honored before the match.
The loss was the first conference defeat for the NC State all season, dropping the Pack to 8-5 overall and 3-1 in the ACC. The Cavaliers improved to 8-4 in dual matches, 2-0 in conference competition.
The match began at the 141-pound classification, with top-ranked Scott Moore(39-0) of Virginia pinning Alex Hernandez (15-9) six seconds left in the second round. Giamoni (15-5) then decisioned Aaron Martin(13-17), 10-6, at 149 pounds to put the Wolfpack on the board. The Cavaliers would come back however, and extend their lead with an 11-5 decision victory by Paul Bjorlo (25-16) over Bryant Reams (0-3) at 157 pounds.
At 165, No. 14-ranked Tim Foley (26-4) of Virginia picked up six more team points after a win by default over Kawa (13-4). The match was called near the end of the second period after Kawa had surrendered three match points to Foley for an illegal hold, an illegal head butt and an illegal slap to the head. Another Cavalier victory, this time a 9-0 major decision win for Michael Grogan (17-13) over Rick Brownlee (3-8) at 174 pounds, gave Virginia a solid 19-3 lead in the match.
But the Wolfpack would battle back, as Daniel Humphries (12-11) pinned Drew Michelotti (4-22) with one second remaining in their match at 184. Then, Zach Garren (13-10) would pick up another key win for NC State at 197 pounds, when he pinned Kevin Collier (2-5) in 4:24 to pull the Pack within four, 19-15.
NC State would win the next two bouts to take a 21-19 lead into the last match of the afternoon. Heavyweight Jainor Palma (8-14) got two takedowns and a near fall to help take an 11-5 victory over Andrew Leffler (9-21), while Jeremy Hartrum (11-5) also picked up a decision win, with an 8-5 victory over Brian Sticca at 125 pounds. Hromada (3-6) then took a quick 5-2 lead over Cummings (8-8) after the first two rounds. But, Cummings would tie up the bout at 5-5 halfway through the third round, only to surrender two points on the reversal that ultimately sealed the match for the Cavaliers.
The regular season homestand concluded today for NC State, as the Wolfpack will now head to take on Iowa State on Friday.
