RALEIGH, N.C. - The college baseball game between NC State and Campbell scheduled for Saturday at Doak Field was suspended because of rain in the bottom of the seventh inning with NC State leading 5-1. The game will be resumed at that point when the two teams meet again at Doak Field on April 14.
The Wolfpack put all five runs on the board in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, Lee Mezistrano and Ryan Johnson singled to put runners on first and second, and Jake Muyco singled through the right side to drive in Mezistrano with the first run. Jonathan Diaz sacrificed the runners to second and third, and Matt Camp singled up the middle to drive in both and give NC State a 3-0 lead. Bryan Kinneberg reached base on catcher's interference, and Dustin Knight and Jason St. Julien both singled to drive in runs, making it 5-0.
Campbell scored in the top of the seventh on a leadoff walk to Michael Priest, an error and a two-out single by Tom Rispoli. The run, off freshman reliever Gib Hobson, was unearned.
NC State starter Vern Sterry was outstanding, working six scoreless innings. He allowed two hits, walked none and struck out four. Campbell's Rob Finch pitched six innings, and aside from the second inning matched Sterry. Finch allowed five runs, two of them unearned, on nine hits. He walked none and struck out two. Outside of the second inning, he allowed just three harmless singles, and only one runner advanced past second base.
NC State is scheduled to play again on Tuesday vs. William & Mary. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
