NC State narrowly dropped its inaugural softball game 1-0, to Radford as play got under way in the Triangle Classic at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex in Raleigh, N.C. The Wolfpack received a strong pitching performance form Abbie Sims, who pitched six innings while allowing only one unearned run and struck out seven Highlanders. Radford scored the games only run in the third inning, as Lara Wohlgemuth singled before scoring off of a sacrifice fly by Glynn Tolleson.
Wohlgemuth lead off the third with a single down the third base line, before a single to left by Lindsay Woody put runners on first and second with no outs. Wohlgemuth advanced to third as Woody went to second on a passed ball as Tolleson stood in the box. Her sacrifice fly to center field would produce the only run, as Wohlgemuth scored from third.
NC State, the visiting team for the game, came up to bat in the top of the seventh and sent Heather Jedrey to the plate to lead off. Jedrey replaced Caroline Blount in left field in the bottom of the six inning before taking Blount's spot in the batting order in the seventh. Jedrey drew a four pitch walk, and Laura Klem flied out to center for the first out.
Shania Ervin pinch hit for Lee Hasper, driving a 1-1 pitch off the Highlander's Jennifer Bosley just short of the wall in right-center field, moving Jedrey to third. Hasper would reenter the game to run, stealing second to give the Wolfpack runners at second and third with one out. After Rene? LaCroix struckout swinging, Heather Gelbard, who had the other Wolfpack hit with a single in the third inning, came to the plate with the tying and go ahead runs on the field. Gelbard struck out on the fourth pitch, and Radford sent NC State to its first loss.
Inaugural Game Notes: Heather Gelbard, a freshman from Miami, Fla. recorded the first hit in school history with her third inning single ... Abbie Sims, a freshman from Artesia, N.M. was the first player to reach base safely when she was hit by a pitch in the first inning ... Sims was also the first player to strike out a batter when she fanned Amber Drexel on three pitches in the second inning.
