NC State women's golf coach Page Marsh announced that Lauren Doughtie has signed a national letter of intent to attend NC State next fall and play women's golf for the Wolfpack. Doughtie, who hails from Suffolk, Va., was recently named the 2004 Virginia State Golf Association Women's Junior Player of the Year.
The award caps a successful season for Doughtie, who advanced to the round of 32 at the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship at the Golden Horseshoe's Green Course in Williamsburg, Va., earlier this year. Doughtie qualified for the event by carding a 74 to finish second among 30 golfers, all of whom were older than her, at the Bull Run course in Springfield last May.
"Lauren will be such an asset to our team next year, Marsh said. "She has such great enthusiasm, athleticism, work ethic, leadership skills and is very strong academically. She has the whole package. Lauren will be a wonderful ambassador as a student-athlete at NC State."
A fifth place finisher at the VSGA Junior Girls' Championship, Doughtie posted a final day singles victory to help Virginia to a fourth straight triumph at the Virginia-Maryland Junior Girls' Team Matches, and notched a last day singles' win at the Mid-Atlantic Girls' Challenge. Doughtie, who attends Nansemond-Suffolk Academy in Suffolk, Va., finished third at the 2004 North-South Junior Championship and tied for 11th place at the American Junior Golf Association Richmond Junior.
