RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State women's swimming fell to the visiting North Carolina Tar Heels in an ACC contest, 203-97 on Wednesday night in Raleigh, N.C. The Wolfpack (4-2 overall, 2-2 in the ACC) got strong performances from junior diver Molly Culberson and sophomores Halle Kiehlmier and Lindsay Barwegen but it wasn't enough against the No. 16 Tar Heels (4-1, 3-0).
Culberson won the 3-meter with a 317.48, the third best mark in the conference and the top mark for NC State this season. She finished second in the 1-meter competition with a score of 267.68. Her nine event wins this season is tied for first on the Wolfpack with Barwegen.
Barwegen won her ninth event against the Tar Heels as well, winning the 1000 freestyle for the fifth time this season. Her time of 10:10.86 a little over a second off of her team leading time this season. She finished second, barely, in the 500 freestyle event, losing by one-hundreth of a second. Her 13 top-5 finishes is tied for second on the team.
Kielhmier was impressive in both breaststroke events again this season, winning the 100 and finishing second in the 200. She set NC State'a top time this season in both of the events against the Tar Heels, breaking her own marks in each event. Her time of 1:05.86 was good for the win in the 100, while her 200 time of 2:21.35 was the second best time at the meet. Both times narrowly missed the ACC top-10 times list.
Kerry Whitson, the team leader in the 100-, 200-, and 500 freestyle events, finished second in the 200 free with a 1:53.67 and second in the 100 (53.09). Catherine Parks finished second in the 100 and 200 butterfly with times of 59.08 and 2:07.09, respectively.
The women return to the pool with the NC State men's team as the Wolfpack hosts the Wolfpack Invite on Dec. 11. The meet starts at 9 am at the Willis Casey Natatorium.
