Rifle Finds Success at Walsh Invitational

RALEIGH, N.C. - On Friday, Nov. 19, the NC State rifle team fired a 4,562 total score (2,273 smallbore, 2,289 air rifle) to collect ninth-place at the Walsh Invitational in Cincinnati, Ohio. The smallbore and air rifle totals were the highest scored by the rifle squad so far this season.
Freshman Tom Knight led the team with a total score of 1,145. Knight shot a 571 in smallbore, while boasting a team high 574 points in the air rifle event. Redshirt senior Ryan Dorety and sophomore Jennifer Marshall both aided the squad with scores of 1,141. In smallbore competition, Dorety shot a 571, while Marshall tallied 568 points. In air rifle action, Marshall scored 573, while Dorety collected a 570. Sophomore Matthew Gifford finished fourth for the team with a 1,135 total. Redshirt freshman Bill Reynolds added a score of 1,093.
Dorety's 571 score in the smallbore set a new personal record. In air rifle, Gifford broke his previous record, while Knight tied his personal best. Reynolds also broke past his previous personal best in air rifle.
The totals left the Pack in ninth-place out of 13 competing teams, only four points behind Tennessee Tech, which holds several national championships to it's credit. The Walsh Invitational, however, is not complete, as the open match runs through the end of November. For complete results visit this link.
