RALEIGH, N.C. - On Saturday, Oct. 16, the NC State rifle team improved their record to 6-1 in the South Eastern Air Rifle Conference (SEARC) with wins over Mercer and two Citadel squads, while falling to Birmingham Southern. In addition, the Pack improves to 3-1 in NCAA competition.
Sophomore Jennifer Marshall led the Pack with a total score of 574, firing a team high 99 score in string six. Fellow sophomore Matthew Gifford added 570 points, while freshman Tom Knight continued to make a name for himself, shooting a 567. Redshirt senior Tammy Montgomery, redshirt sophomore Kirk Freeman and redshirt freshman Bill Reynolds each added valuable performances, helping the Pack collect crucial conference wins.
"Everybody shot well for us and it was a pretty solid match," said head coach Keith Miller. "We came up short a few points on Birmingham Southern, but we expected to have a tight match with them. We are two of the strongest teams in the conference this year, so we expected to duke it out with them. We feel confident that we will make up for dropping one round to them.
"Jennifer and Tom continued to perform well, as they have all season long," coach Miller said. "Matthew is really starting to improve and has been making great strides in upping his performance week in and week out. He is really starting to make a name for himself."
The NC State rifle team will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 13 at the ACC Invitational. The match also serves as the second SEARC competition for the team this season. Clemson, The Citdael, Wofford and North Georgia College will also compete alongside the Pack during the competition. The meet will take place at the Wake County Range in Holly Springs, N.C., starting at 9 a.m.
"It's the only home SEARC match that we have this year, so it's the one chance that we will have for a good home performance during conference competition," coach Miller said.
