Cary, N.C. - The NC State men's soccer team fell to North Carolina, 2-0, in the first round of the 2004 ACC Tournament Wednesday night at SAS Soccer Stadium. After a scoreless first half, the Tar Heels (10-7-2) scored two second half goals for the win. The Wolfpack (8-8-2) hit the post twice in the contest, but could not come up with a goal. Keeper Jorge Gonzalez finished with four saves on the day for NC State.
NC State had one of its top scoring chances just seven minutes into the contest. Freshman El Hadj Cisse used some fancy dribbling and found a crease in the UNC defense. Cisse's shot hit the crossbar. The Pack had another near chance with less then 11 minutes remaining, as junior John Queeley's free kick was saved by UNC's Ford Williams and then bounced off the crossbar.
After a scoreless first half of action, North Carolina would strike first in the 73rd minute. Blake Beach played a ball across the field to Andrew Rhea at the top of the box. Rhea would dribble in and net his first goal of the season. The Tar Heels would add an insurance goal in the 81st minute. Dax McCarty took a free kick and lobbed the ball to Jamie Watson inside the Pack penalty box. Watson flicked the ball past Gonzalez and into the net.
UNC held the advantage in shots, 11-5, and Ford Williams recorded the shutout with his three saves.
