NC State will look to upset the No. 23 ranked Maryland Terrapins when the squad travels to College Park, Md. for a 7 p.m. Friday night showdown. The Wolfpack has upset the Terrapins the last two season, including a 2-1 double overtime victory the last time the two teams met at Maryland in 2002. The Terps will enter the contest with an overall record of 4-3-2 and an Atlantic Coast Conference record of 1-3-1. NC State is 7-3-2 and 1-3-0 in ACC play.
NC State is 14-3-4 all-time versus the Terrapins and since the two teams met for the first time in 1985, the Wolfpack has lost just four times and not since 2001. Additionally, NC State has not fallen to the Terrapins in College Park since 1998. With five years since that loss behind it, NC State will look continue such success. The Pack has lost three-straight ACC matches since defeating Miami 1-0 back on Sept. 17. NC State fell to Virginia Tech back on Oct. 3, 1-0, regrettably and will look to reset its conference record with a win at Maryland. In doing so, the Wolfpack will look for some offensive production from leading scorers, seniors Anna Helenius and Erin Griswold. Griswold has a team-best seven goal, while Helenius has six. Helenius also has a team-high six helpers. Sophomore Megan Connors has played in 11 matches with 10 starts and has accumulated a 6-3-2 record. The netminder has made 29 saves, while allowing just nine nets.
Maryland is fresh off a 0-0 tie with No. 6 Virginia on Tuesday. Despite an onslaught of shots from the Cavaliers, which held a 28-to-6 advantage, the Terrapins were able to hold off a Virginia win after its keeper, sophomore Nikki Resnick, made seven saves. The Terrapins tallied just one shot on goal among the six in the match, including just two in each regulation half and one in each overtime period. Maryland's leading scorer, junior Mallory Mahar, has recorded 11 points from her five goals and one assist. Junior forward Kimmy Francis leads the Terps with four assists. In net, Resnick has started all nine games, made 55 saves and allowed 10 goals. As a team, Maryland has one just one ACC match, while totaling a small lead in goals over its opponents, 12-to-10.
"Maryland has had some great results against Top 20 teams, including their latest tie vs. Virginia," said NC State head coach Laura Kerrigan. "They are a well-coached, well-organized team."
The two teams are in a race for the chance at taking sixth place in the conference standings. No. 22 Wake Forest travels to No. 17 Florida State on Friday as well. Both the Deacons and the Seminoles own a 1-2-0 record in ACC play and share the sixth place spot.
NC State will next travel to No. 9 Duke on Tuesday, Oct. 12, in Durham for a 7 p.m. start.
