Rifle Finishes Second at VMI Invitational

NC State rifle won two more matches but fell to Akron, one of the nation's top-25 teams, at the VMI Invitational. Akron finished 17th in the country a year ago, and won the invitational, with a score of 2,263, just ahead of NC State with a 2,229. VMI finished third with a 2,143 while John Jay came in fourth at 1,719. Jennifer Marshall and Tom Knight once again led NC State as the Wolfpack improves to 5-1.
Marshall fired a 565 to lead the squad, firing a pair of 98s in prone, and a 94 and 96 in standing and kneeling, respectively. Her score was a single point ahead of Knight, who posted a 564. He shot 98 on both prone positions as well, and closed strong with a 95 and 94 in kneeling.
Ryan Dorety was third on the scoring team with a 551, while Kirk Freeman rounded out the four scorers with a 549.
Matthew Gifford and Bill Reynolds shot in the match as well, firing impressive scores of 554 and 558, respectively. Reynolds was particularly productive in two of the three positions, firing a 199 out of the possible 200 to lead the team in prone. He also led the team in kneeling, firing a 97 and 98.
Wolfpack rifle will travel to Dahlonega, Ga. on Oct. 16 for the SEARC #1, the first conference meet of the season.
