The NC State volleyball team will look to grab its first Atlantic Coast Conference win of the 2004 season Tuesday night at Reynolds Coliseum when it plays host to rival North Carolina. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
Over the weekend, the Wolfpack (10-7, 0-4 ACC) fell to conference foes Virginia and Maryland; two losses that have only made NC State hungrier as it heads into Tuesday's match. Already, the Pack has four players who have recorded 125 kills or more, led by junior middle blocker Adeola Kosoko and senior outside hitter Melanie Rowe. Kosoko sports a .340 attack percentage with a team-best 205 kills, while Rowe is just behind her with 195 kills of her own. Freshman outside hitter Emily Bertrand and junior middle blocker Stefani Eddins have also made strong contributions to NC State's offense; recording 133 and 125 kills respectively thus far.
On the defensive side of the net, Eddins leads the team with 97 total blocks, good for an average of 1.54 blocks per game. Meanwhile, freshman libero Andrea Bentley comes in with a team-high 186 digs, and setters Lauren Markowski and Melissa Rabe have shared the court, dishing out 621 and 77 assists respectively.
The Tar Heels enter the match at 8-7, 3-1 in ACC play, and are led by senior outside hitter Molly Pyles and junior outside hitter Dani Nyenhuis offensively. Pyles is the team's leader in kills with 208 off a .205 attack percentage, while Nyenhuis has also stepped up with 190 kills for UNC. Sophomore middle hitter Amy Beaver and senior middle hitter Katie Wright have been dangerous around the net defensively, combining for 110 total blocks, while senior defensive specialist Caroline deRoeck leads the Tar Heels in digs with 228. Finally, junior setter McKenzie Byrd has totaled 622 assists thus far for North Carolina.
