COLLEGE PARK, Md. - NC State women's soccer tied No. 19 Maryland in overtime, but fell 4-2 in a game-winning shootout, Sunday, Oct. 31 at Maryland's Ludwig Field. The game-winner by Carissa Gilbert in Maryland's fourth shootout attempt, allowed the Terps to advance to the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament. The game will go into to the record books as a tie in the first round of the ACC postseason tournament.
Despite a 14-to-4 shot margin in favor of Maryland, the score stood at 0-0 heading into the half. Sophomore Megan Connors made several terrific saves, including a right-to-left tip over the crossbar, saving a shot by the Terps' Stevie Dunning. Dunning led the match with two shots on goal, both coming from the left side. Connors finished the first 45 minutes with seven saves. NC State's attack was held to just four shots in the first half, including one each from senior Katherine Warman, sophomore Megan Connors and freshmen Vanessa Wellman and Allie Wilkerson. Warman's shot was perhaps the best opportunity for the Wolfpack to score. Maryland's keeper, Nikki Resnick came out to make a play and Warman then touched it past Resnick. The ball scooted inches from the right lower post.
NC State's defense again played a strong half, as the Wolfpack held Maryland scoreless. The Terps wracked up 16 shots, just three on goal. Two Maryland shots landed on the frame, one on the far post and one controversial shot that apppeared to be saved by Connors over the bar. The call was a goal kick however. The Wolfpack again tallied four shots, including two from senior Erin Griswold early in the half. Griswold sent two shots in from the left side, one a header and the second a hard turn that forced Resnick to dive left. Maryland's 30 shots tied a season-high in regulation play. Connors collected three additional saves bringing her total to 10, just one shy of tying her career-best. A mark she recorded at No.10 Duke on Oct. 10.
In the first overtime, NC State dominated the offensive attack rallying for four-straight shots, including two from Tognetti. Warmen struck first, but it landed straight to the hands of Resnick. Griswold added another, a chip shot from the left side that went over the top. Maryland was held without a shot for the entire 10 minutes, after entering with 30 for the match.
The reverse was true for Maryland in the second overtime. Maryland saw the most offensive action by tallying two shots. Simone Dekker took a shot from the right side that landed on the crossbar.
After two golden goal overtime halves, the match went to a shootout. In a shootout, each team is granted five kicks, alternating between teams. For Maryland: Francis, Dekker, Arias, Gilbert and Rozumalski. For NC State: Tognetti, Helenius, Graul, Sadler and Tanzi.
