RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State women's soccer fell to visiting Virginia Tec, 1-0 on Sunday, Oct. 3. The Hokies netted the game-winning goal just four minutes into the match, a one-touch from senior Ryan Johnson nearside. The goal dropped NC State's record to 7-3-2 overall and 1-3-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. Virginia Tech improved to 7-3-0 and 3-1-0 in ACC action. The Wolfpack travels to Maryland on Friday, Oct. 8. The match is set for 7 p.m. in College Park, Md.
It didn't take long for Virginia Tech to get on the board, in fact it took just over four minutes to net the match's only goal. The play was a two-touch combo, beginning at the feet of freshman Heather Hallberg near the top right corner of the box. She placed it Johnson who was waiting just inside the left side of the keeper box. The Wolfpack played much of the first half at Virginia Tech's end, but did see a well-placed shot from junior Lydia McBath. McBath broke through the Hokies defense at the top of the box and forced the Virginia Tech keeper, sophomore Mallory Soldner, to punch out the save. Freshmen Alex Caram and Jessica O'Rourke also tallied two shots that went wide. The Wolfpack keeper, sophomore Megan Connors, collected two saves in addition to the one goal allowed before the break.
The Pack came out harder in the second half looking to tie the match early. Caram tallied two more shots, but both were on goal this time. One shot was saved as Soldner dove to her right to push the ball wide. Virginia Tech held NC State to just three shots in the second half. The other shot was taken by senior Erin Griswold, who played at midfield this game, from the right side corner. The Hokies picked up six shots in the second half, but just three landed on frame. Two balls were captured by Connors and the other bounced off the crossbar.
"We played tired today, which is something we shouldn't be doing at this level," said NC State head coach Laura Kerrigan. "We can still accomplish all of our goals we set at the beginning of the year. We just didn't play the way we know we can, which is unfortunate because this is a game we thought we should have won."
NC State will play its next two games on the road, beginning with Maryland next Friday, before traveling to Durham for a match against No. 17/22 Duke on Tuesday, Oct. 12.
