Wolfpack on Prowl for ACC Victory

NC State women's soccer will host its final home match of the 2004 regular season when No. 23 Wake Forest comes to town, Friday, Oct. 22. The Pack is looking to avenge a loss at Wake Forest last season on its senior day and also put an end to an unlucky losing spell. NC State is 7-6-2 and 1-6-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. The Demon Deacons enter the meeting with an overall docket of 9-5-1 and sit in sixth place in the ACC standings with a 3-4-0 record. Wake Forest holds a narrow advantage in the all-time series, 6-5-1. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m., at the SAS Soccer Stadium in Cary.
"Wake Forest has been a solid team all year, said NC State head coach Laura Kerrigan. They defeated No. 3 Virginia earlier in the season and recently beat Maryland. However, we played a very strong game versus Florida State last Sunday and believe that if we continue that style of play, we can beat Wake Forest."
Senior Erin Griswold who has team-best 21 points and eight goals will lead the Wolfpack. Three of those goals were game-winners and the forward has five assists as well. Senior Anna Helenius and sophomore Carol Tognetti each lead the Pack with six helpers. Helenius has six goals to go along with her assists, while Tognetti has five. In net for NC State will be sophomore Megan Connors. She has 51 saves on the year and allowed 17 goals. The netminder also has three shutouts on her resume. The New Jersey native is ranked fourth in the ACC for saves per match with 3.57 on average. NC State has lost five straight matches heading into the Friday night match and six-straight in the ACC, having picked up its lone victory in the conference opener at Miami back on Sept. 17. The Pack's recent loss came despite a come from behind effort to upset the No. 11 ranked Florida State Seminoles on Sunday, Oct. 17. The Pack scored two goals in the second half after sitting through a 1-0 FSU halftime lead.
The Deacs recently shutdown the high caliber Maryland Terps 2-0 on Saturday, Oct. 16. The squad's leading scorer, junior forward Sarah Kozey tallied her 10th goal of the season in the meeting. She also placed all five of her shots on goal, forcing Maryland to make seven saves. Kozey has a team-high 24 points, which also includes a high of four assists. WFU's three ACC wins came against No. 3 Virginia on Oct. 1, 2-1 in overtime, Miami, 5-0 and Maryland. Freshman Heather Currie has seen the majority of the net time. She has 45 saves on the year and has allowed 15 goals, while tallying three shutouts.
The Wolfpack has just one regular season match remaining. NC State will travel to No. 4 Virginia on Wednesday, Oct. 27, for a 5 p.m. kick-off.
