Women's Tennis Succeeds at USTA National Invitational

RALEIGH, N.C. - From Saturday, Oct. 9 through Monday, Oct. 11, the NC State women's tennis team competed at the historic National Tennis Center in New York City as a part of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) National Invitational. The tournament featured four singles brackets and two doubles brackets, while playing host to some of the top collegiate squads in the nation.
In the Flight B singles west bracket, Agustina Arechavaleta defeated Georgetown's Libby Bartell in two sets, 6-3, 6-1. During the Flight C west round, Elin Stahl Johannson continued to impress, collecting two wins. First, Stahl Johannson batted from behind to defeat Gia Nafarrete of Boston College, 3-6, 6-3 (7). In the next match, Stahl Johannson cruised to victory over Yale's Stephanie White, 6-3, 6-1.
The Wolfpack found a lot of success in the Flight D west bracket, with freshman standout Julia Roach and senior leader Carmen Torres each collecting two victories. Roach continued her successful fall slate with a win over Columbia's Kendall Murphy, 6-1, 6-1. Roach then followed with another victory over Alina Balasa or Rugters, 6-0, 6-2. In the same bracket, Torres beat Lauren Edelschein in a close match, 6-2, 4-6 (10-4). Torres collected her second win over Dartmouth's Evie Stevens, 6-4, 6-1.
Virginia Romero dominated the east wing of the Flight E bracket, collecting three wins. Romero first defeated Anela Dujsic of Rutgers, 6-3, 6-4, before upping Columbia's Kara Worsley, 6-2, 3-6 (10-7). Romero collected her final win over Penn State's Lindsay Downing, 6-1, 6-3.
In doubles action, Arechavaleta and Danielle Stadelmann fought out a win over Gia Nafarrete and Linsey Nash of Boston College, 9-8. Roach and Romero earned a victory of their own, defeating Arkansas' Illiana Pacheco and Whitney Morton, 8-6.
This weekend, Friday, Oct. 15 through Sunday, Oct. 17, the Wolfpack will host 21 teams as they open up the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center to host the Residence Inn North Wolfpack Invitational.
