The Wolfpack is searching for its first Atlantic Coast Conference victory after going 0-3 in the first three games. The Pack is 8-8 overall and will face a tough 11-3 , 1-2 Clemson squad in Littlejohn Coliseum.
With one Atlantic Coast Conference game out of the way, NC State went on to host back-to-back league games at home, which included a very hot Wake Forest squad and the nationally ranked North Carolina Tar Heels. Three Wolfpack players reached double figures against the Demon Deacons, led by senior Kaayla Chones' 22 points and nine rebounds. Freshman Marquetta Dickens, who earned her first career start, finished with 16 points, while senior Nanna Rivers added 10. Despite getting the points, it wasn't enough to overcome the speed and quickness of the Wake Forest back court which scored 37 of the Deacons' 70 points, led by sophomore Cotelia Bond-Young's 27. On Thursday, the Pack renewed the NC State-North Carolina rivalry by taking the Tar Heels to the final seconds before ending the game in a one-point heartbreaker 58-57. Chones continued her dominating presence in the paint as she collected 19 points and 12 rebounds for her 26th career double-double. Senior Alvine Mendeng also finished in double digits with 13 points. Senior point guard Kendra Bell added eight points, seven rebounds and five assists. As a team the Pack held UNC to its lowest scoring game of the season, which was a result of the lowest field goal percentage at 30.8 percent. The Pack's record stands at 8-8 overall and 0-3 in ACC play heading into the game at Clemson. NC State and Clemson split the series last year with earch team earning a home victory.
Clemson has lost two straight, including one at home and one on the road. The Tigers hosted Florida State on Thursday and earned their second ACC loss after a score of 68-61. The other loss came at North Carolina on Jan. 4, 72-47, Clemson's biggest loss this season. Senior guard Lakeia Stokes, who has led the Clemson squad in 10 of its 14 games, including the last eight contests. She is averaging 18.4 ppg and has totaled three, 20-point games, including a high of 28 versus Furman. In addition, she has been the team's bully on the boards in seven games, which includes the last five. Senior Maggie Slosser has been helping Stokes on the glass, picking up an average of 6.9 rpg, good enough for second on the team. Sophomore Amanda White, who as an All-ACC Freshman, is averaging 6.4 ppg and 4.7 rpg. Following the loss to Alaska in the Alaska Shootout earlier this season, Clemson went on a nine-game winning streak, which extended into its first ACC contest at Virginia. The Tigers came away with a 58-55 win to get the ball rolling in conference action. Clemson has earned a couple of good wins with a 103-99 overtime win against South Carolina to begin the year and a 69-64 win over Rutgers.
