Head coach Kay Yow opening statement:
"Five seconds. What a difference five seconds made. Had we had the timeout before the travel, we could have held on for five seconds. It was a great rebound and that close to turning this game around."
"This is the toughest loss of the season. I am so proud of our team and the heart they showed out there."
"We played well enough to get a win, and it was a tough game."
On both teams shooting in the 30% range:
"Both teams played strong defense and struggled from the field. It was hard for either team to pull ahead because of the shooting. We kept fighting like heavyweight boxers, and both kept throwing punches all night. Neither team could get the KO."
Kaayla Chones on team's defense:
"We worked all week in practice on defense and in preparing to stop them. We knew they play with intensity and when they came out we matched their intensity all game. Our strong defense and aggressive play really made a difference."
Nanna Rivers on tough loss:
It was a disappointing loss. We played our hearts out and everything went good for us. All that really happened was we basically didn't come out with the win. This isn't a setback for us we will take positives out of this game. We'll take steps forward not backwards to succeed as a team and learn from this game.
On rebounding against a strong rebounding North Carolina team:
"Box out. We had the words box out all over our foreheads. We knew that they attack the glass but we never backed down. We did a good job of rebounding and boxing out."
UNC head coach Sylvia Hatchell
"NC State played their hearts out. They played so hard, and so physical. They were the most physical team we've played all season. It was a ugly win, but it was a win. With 30 percent shooting, I told the team the good thing is we played well enough to win. We know we can play a lot better. NC State had a lot to do [with our shooting effort]. It was physical and we were missing our shots inside. We went to Candace [Sutton] inside, and she always had [Kaayla] Chones on her. In the end we used Candace as a decoy for Camille [Little]. Camille and La'Tangela [Atkinson] produced for us. We were very fortunate to win this game, but we will take it and move on.
"What I said to them in the lockerrom was that I was happy for the win, but upset about the shot selection. I did not think we played as a team tonight. We did not pass the ball like we've been passing it. We only had 11 assists, and we've been having 18 a game. Our shot selection was extremely poor today and that had a lot to do with our shooting percentage."
On the rebounding effort
"Every timeout we got the stats, and at halftime we were really out rebounding them, but in the second half they really boxed us out, they really pushed us out from underneath the basket and used their bodies on us. It was extremely physical. We were taking it in there, and we got on the foul line more than they did. We were taking it inside on purpose most of the time."
