Wolfpack and Tar Heels Meet in Rivaled ACC Matchup

RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State women's basketball, 8-7, 0-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, will host the No. 13 ranked North Carolina Tar Heels on Thursday, Jan. 8. The Heels enter the game with a 12-1, 2-0 mark and will tip off against the Wolfpack at 7:06 p.m. on FOX Sports Net South.
The Wolfpack sits at 8-7 overall after losing its first two Atlantic Coast Conference games to go 0-2 in league play. NC State hosted the first of a two-game homestand on Monday, Jan. 5 versus Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons came away with the victory 70-66 after sophomore Cotelia Bond-Young scored 27 points. Senior Kaayla Chones led the Wolfpack for the 11th time this season with her 22 points and nine rebounds. She continues to lead the scoring and rebounding for NC State averaging 14.9 ppg and 7.8 rpg. Freshman Marquetta Dickens earned her first career start as head coach Kay Yow altered the starting five for the first time this season. Dickens filled the shoes well as she scored 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting. She also added four rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal in 28 minutes. In ACC games only, Chones, Dickens and senior Nanna Rivers rank in the top 10 of 11 categories. Chones is among the league's leaders in scoring (17.5 ppg-5th), rebounding (9.0 rpg-3rd), field goal percentage (62.5-5th), blocked shots (2.00-2nd), offensive rebounds (3.5-7th) and defensive rebounds (5.5-4th). Dickens is ninth in field goal percentage (53.6 percent), three-point field goal percentage (57.1 percent), three-pointers made (2.00 pg) and second in blocked shots (2.00). Rivers is third in assists with an average of 5.00 per game, 10th in steals with 2.00 a contest and sixth in assist/turnover ratio, 1.83. NC State has lost just six times to the Tar Heels at home and owns a 26-5 overall record in Reynolds against UNC.
North Carolina opened its ACC slate with a perfect 2-0 record after picking up wins over Clemson, 72-47 on against Wake Forest 90-79. The game versus NC State will be the first ACC road contest for the Tar Heels this season. North Carolina began the 2003-04 schedule with six-straight wins before falling 73-68 at Old Dominion on Dec. 7. Since then the squad has not lost in six games. The Heels' scoring has come from three underclassmen, led by freshman Camille Little. The forward/guard has tallied 14.6 ppg overall and 21.5 ppg in ACC games only. She also leads the team in rebounds, averaging 8.3 rpg and 10.5 in ACC contests. Freshman Ivory Latta is second on the team in points with her 13.7 per and sophomore La'Tangela Atkinson is adding 11.0 ppg for the third spot and is second in rebounding with 8.1 rpg. Center Candace Sutton is the only senior in the Tar Heels' starting lineup this season; she is also the tallest standing at 6-foot-6. Little leads the ACC in rebounding overall and in defensive rebounds after averaging a double-double in ACC games only (21.5 ppg, 10.5 rpg). She has been an ACC Rookie of the Week three times this season, while Latta has earned the distinction once. UNC has earned four Rookie of the Week honors, more than any other institution this season. The road game at NC State will be just the fourth game this season in which the Heels have played away from the confines of the Carmichael Auditorium in Chapel Hill.
