Women's Hoops Prepare to Host Wake Forest

RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State women's basketball, 8-6 overall and 0-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, will host the 7-6, 0-2 ACC, Wake Forest Demon Deacons on Monday, Jan. 5 in Reynolds Coliseum. The Pack will look to extend its home winning streak to five when the game tips off at 7 p.m.
The Wolfpack enters its second ACC game with a four-game winning streak at home and a 25-2 record versus the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in Reynolds Coliseum. The Pack recently opened the ACC season with a 68-56 loss at Maryland on Friday, Jan. 2. Led by senior center Kaayla Chones who tallied 13 points and nine rebounds for her 13th double-figure game of the year. She continues to lead the team in points and rebounds, averaging 14.4 ppg and 7.7 rpg. She picked up her fourth double-double of the year and 25th of her career in the Appalachian State victory on Dec. 31. In addition she has led the Pack in scoring in 10 of the Pack's 14 games and led in rebounding nine times. Senior forward Alvine Mendeng has stepped up her game lately as she has posted two double-figure scoring nights, which included a season-high 18 over ASU, just two shy of tying her career total. Freshman Marquetta Dickens continues to learn the ropes of Division I basketball, but recently displayed what she has learned thus far. The forward tallied seven points, eight rebounds and five assists, with just two turnovers in her 17 minutes versus App. State. She is second among freshmen in scoring, behind Keisha Brown's 7.2 ppg, in scoring with 6.6 ppg. In the Pack's eight wins, Dickens has averaged 8.3 ppg and 2.8 rpg, as the team's second leading scorer. The Pack owns a 48-5 record versus the Wake Forest program, which includes 14-straight entering the game on Monday.
Wake Forest is coming off a 90-79 loss at No. 14 North Carolina on Jan. 2. The Deacons kept the game close with just a six-point deficit heading into half-time by the Tar Heels were paced by Ivory Latta's 30 points to put the Wake Forest team away in the end. Four players averaging double figures including a team-high 12.2 from junior forward Erin Ferrill lead the Demon Deacons. Sophomore guard Liz Strunk has been adding 11.6 ppg, while senior guard Tonia Brown and sophomore guard Cotelia Bond-Young have added just over 10 ppg apiece. Strunk has also put some pressure on the boards as she notches 4.8 rebounds per. Bond-Young has been doing the dishing as she gives out 3.6 assists per game. The Deacs started the season off strong, picking up three straight wins, but then quickly went the opposite way with three straight losses, which included falling to the eighth ranked Purdue Boilermakers, 76-56 and the No. 4 ranked Duke Blue Devils in the ACC opener on Dec. 14, 87-29. Since the loss at Duke, Wake Forest has gone 4-and-3 picking up wins over North Carolina A&T, Florida A&M, at Princeton and versus Holy Cross. The three losses were against No. 16 Virginia Tech, 70-59 and recently to UNC. Sixth year head coach Charlene Curtis, who has tallied a record of 62-118 at the helm, coaches WFU. She is 0-and-10 against the Wolfpack.
