NORMAN, Okla. - Freshman 197-pounder Zach Garren defeated Austin David 7-5 in overtime in the next-to-last bout of the match, but that was all NC State managed in a 39-3 dual-match loss Saturday night to eighth-ranked Oklahoma. The loss snapped a four-match winning streak for the Wolfpack, which dropped to 6-3.
Garren, who won his fourth match in a row, improved to 10-9 with the victory, but the rest of the Wolfpack lineup did not fare well. Junior 141-pounder Alex Hernandez wrestled well in a 6-5 loss to defending national champion Teyon Ware, senior 149-pounder Jake Giamoni dropped a 2-1 decision to Jeff Ecklof, and senior 165-pounder Dustin Kawa fell 8-5 to Rafael Maturino.
Oklahoma won three matches by major decision, one by injury default, one by forfeit and one by fall.
NC State will return to action on Wednesday, February 4 vs. Old Dominion at Reynolds Coliseum. The match, a makeup for a bout that was lost to last week's ice storm, will begin at 7:30.
