Wolfpack Solid in First Day at ACC Indoor Championships

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - NC State opened the spring tennis season with s strong first day at the ACC Indoor Championships in Winston-Salem, N.C. winning three singles matches, including two by Will Shaw as he advanced to the final 16 in the main draw. Shaw, a sophomore from Sevenoaks, England, defeated Andrew Watkins of UNC 6-4, 6-2 before dropping Nico Gysi of Georgia Tech in straight sets, 3 and 4. He will face Jonathan Stokke of Duke Saturday at 11:30 am.
Freshman Andre Iriarte, who joined the team from Rockville, Md. for the start of the semester, won his first collegiate match in his first tournament, winning 3 and 1 against Will Chewning of Wake Forest. Iriarte would take the first set 6-3 from Brad Pomeroy (UNC) in the round of 32, before falling in the final two sets 7-6(5), 6-2. Iriarte teamed with sophomore Val Banada, who won a team best 10 singles matches in 2003, to defeat Depaolo/Tyler of Georgia Tech 8-3. The duo would lose to Rodrigues/Stokke 8-3 in the round of 16 one match later.
Junior Conor Taylor, a first year player from Ireland, defeated Marko Rejevac of Georgia Tech 7-6(5), 6-3 in his opening round match before falling 7-6 (3), 2-6, 7-6(3) in a marathon battle with Brett Ross of Wake Forest.
