NC State women's basketball will host Virginia on Thursday, Jan. 15. The Wolfpack stands at 8-9 and 0-4 in the ACC will tip off against the 7-7, 1-2 Cavaliers at 7 p.m. in Reynolds Coliseum. Virginia holds a 32-25 overall advantage since the two teams first met in 1974. The teams are knotted at 13 apiece in games played in Reynolds.
NC State is still searching for its first Atlantic Coast Conference win of the season after picking up two losses both on the road and at home. NC State recently fell to host Clemson on Sunday, 77-64, despite having three players finish in double figures. Two freshmen led the scoring effort for the Wolfpack. Ashley Key came off the bench to lead all scorers with 18 points, coming off of five three pointers. Marquetta Dickens was next in line with 13 points. She has started the last three ACC games and is just one of two players averaging double figures in ACC games only. Senior Kaayla Chones, who has led the team in scoring for 15 games, is averaging a team-best 14.9 ppg and also is leading the team with 7.8 rpg. In addition, Chones tops the ACC in conference games only with 8.8 rpg. She is averaging 16.0 ppg in ACC games played. Senior captain Nanna Rivers has firmly established herself among the league leaders in assists and assist/turnover ratio. She is averaging 3.24 apg and 1.31 A/TO. The Pack has never opened the ACC season 0-4 in its 26 years in the conference. The Pack's record stands at 8-9 overall and 0-4 in ACC play heading into the game at home versus Virginia. NC State and Virginia split the series last year with each team earning a home victory. The Pack has won just five games in the last four years against the Cavaliers, three of which were at home. NC State is looking to erase a four-game losing skid, which includes a two-game losing streak at home. The Wolfpack has not won at home since defeating Appalachian State Dec. 31.
Virginia enters Thursday's game fresh off its first ACC win with a 60-59 thrilling take over Georgia Tech on Monday. The Cavaliers are led by junior forward Brandi Teamer, who is averaging 12.1 pg and 5.8 rpg as the high scorer and rebounder. She is five points shy of eclipsing the 1,000 career point milestone. A preseason All-ACC nominee, Teamer has 20, career double-doubles. She was named ACC Player of the Week for Dec. 30. Her honor was preceded by freshman Siedah Williams, who was named ACC Rookie of the Week on Dec. 22. Senior guard Anna Prillaman and junior LaTonya Blue are the assist leaders, with Prillaman barely edging Blue in that category, as she averages 2.9 apg. Head coach Debbie Ryan has been trying to put together a working starting lineup, after having placed 10 different lineups into the book heading into the Georgia Tech game. Virginia faced some tough competition prior to entering ACC play. The Cavs held court against four ranked teams, which included a win over No. 21 Arizona and losses to Virginia Tech, Texas and Minnesota. Virginia has faced just three ACC teams this season, as they hosted Radford on Jan. 7 prior to the win over GT. The squad won handily 70-35. The other league losses came against Clemson at home, 58-55 and at Maryland, 69-55.
