CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The NC State men's tennis team wrapped things up Sunday, during the last day of the Virginia Invitational. With its players battling it off in consolation matches, the Wolfpack did manage to pick up two wins on the morning.
After advancing to the quarterfinals of a B Consolation match, Dennis Myers fell to Gideon Valkin of Harvard Sunday, 7-6, 6-3. Meanwhile, Will Shaw, who had landed in the championship match after winning two previous matches by default, was also upended by Valkin, 0-6, 7-6, 13-11.
In Sunday's double consolation quarterfinals of the Flight A, Val Banada defeated Old Dominion's Colin Milos in two sets, 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the championship match. Joining Banada there was fellow teammate Conor Taylor, who advanced after defeating Troy Havens of Purdue, 6-3, 7-5. The championship match between Banada and Taylor, however, was not played.
Advancing Saturday with a two-set tiebreaker win over Jon Antle of ODU, NC State's Tyghe Carstens was looking to set up an all-Wolfpack final later on Sunday between him and William Norblitt. But Carstens would fall early Sunday morning to ODU's Adriano Mello, 6-0, 6-1. Norblitt would later share Carstens fate, suffering a two-match defeat to Mello as well, 6-2, 6-4.
