Pack Continues Play in Virginia Invitational

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - NC State had a big day on the courts in the Virginia Invitational. Playing mostly in the consolation matches, the Wolfpack picked up 11 wins on the day. The squad, dominated by youth in Jon Choboy's second season, is continuing to shape up and get the experience it needs to contend.
Dennis Myers downed teammate Jon Davis in a B consolation match Saturday, 6-4, 6-4. He advances to the quarterfinals. Will Shaw could meet Davis in the championship round after winning two matches by default to get there.
Val Banada and Conor Taylor will play in Sunday's double consolation quarterfinals of the Flight A draw with the chance to advance. Banada defeated Purdue's McKinley in two sets, 6-4, 6-1. Taylor advanced by default.
Three men will continue play in the double consolation B draw. Carstens advanced with a two-set tiebreaker win over Antle of ODU. He won 3-6, 6-1(6). Matt Simeon and William Noblitt squared off in the quarterfinals after picking up wins in the day's earlier matches. Simeon was a 6-1, 6-0 winner, and Noblitt downed his opponent 6-2, 6-1. The two moved on to face one another in the quarterfinals and Noblitt prevailed as a 6-2, 6-0 winner over his teammate, positioning himself in the championship match on Sunday. Should Carstens win his match, it could be an all-Wolfpack final.
Banada and R.J. Murray advanced to the quarterfinals by default before falling to Riddle and Ngyen of Harvard, 8-5, in the doubles Flight A Consolation. In the top half of the bracket, Jon Davis and Will Shaw lost to Ross and Spice from Wake Forest, 8-3.
The Pack tandem of Simeon and Noblitt were 8-2 winners over Wake Forest's Bates and Chewning to advance to the quarterfinals of doubles Flight B consolation action. The pair later lost to Li and Chiou of Harvard, 8-2. The pair of Taylor and Myers defeated Harvard's Turner and Beren, 8-5, in the morning, and lost 8-2 to Antle and Manilla of ODU in the afternoon's quarterfinal match.
