RALEIGH, N.C. - Head coach Lisa Navas will lead her 2003-04 softball team in the Elon Fall Tournament, Oct. 4-5, to kick off the fall slate. The tournament games will be the first played by the NC State softball team, as the program is entering it's inaugural year of competition. The Wolfpack will take on the Louisburg College squad on Saturday, Oct. 4, at 11 a.m., before a 1 p.m. meeting with Averett University.
"The fall games give us the opportunity to see the players in action," said Navas. "We use the games to evaluate where we are and what we need to work on the rest of the semester. The players are also getting a taste of what the daily schedule will be like in the spring."
NC State will take to the field with a roster composed of 18 players, including one senior, one junior, two sophomores and 14 freshmen. The group hails from eight different states, namely North Carolina (8), Florida (3), California (2) and one each from Arizona, Illinois, Indiana, Georgia and New Mexico. Navas and her two assistant coaches, Tanya Spishak and Pat Conlan have been on the field with the players for nearly a month preparing the new squad for the busy schedule ahead.
"This is a big step for our program," said Navas. "I have been here for a year and I know I am very excited to see the team in action. We are all very proud to be the first fastpitch team to represent NC State."
