COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The NC State men's soccer team lost 1-0 to top-ranked Maryland Sunday afternoon at Ludwig Field. The Terrapins (6-0, 1-0 ACC) got their game-winner from a first half penalty kick and managed to shut out the Wolfpack (2-3, 0-1 ACC).
Maryland tallied 22 shots in the game, placing 11 on frame. NC State goalkeeper Jorge Gonzalez stopped all but one, finishing the day with eight saves.
Jason Garvey was dragged down inside the penalty box by NC State's Chris Catlett in the 34th minute and Maryland's A.J. Herrara knocked in the penalty kick to give the Terrapins a 1-0 lead and what ended up to be the game-winning goal.
NC State weathered 13 shots in the second half and took six itself, but the score remained 1-0 Maryland's favor. Chris Weaton came off the bench to lead the Wolfpack with two shots, including NCSU's only shot on goal.
The Wolfpack returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 17, when it hosts Temple at the SAS Soccer Complex in Cary, N.C., beginning at 4:00 p.m.
