The NC State women's soccer (3-1) team heads to Fairfax, Va. for the George Mason/Kappa Invitational on Sept. 12 and 14. The Wolfpack will take on Delaware (2-1-1) on Friday at 5 p.m., before facing host George Mason (3-0-1) on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
This will be the first meeting between NC State and Delaware. The Blue Hens kicked-off their 2003 campaign with two straight wins, both shutouts. Delaware defeated Saint Joseph's 4-0 on the opening evening, before earning a 3-0 decision at UMBC. The following weekend, the Blue Hens took on Charlotte and lost 3-1 and then tied with East Carolina, 1-1. Senior forward Fran Termini leads the team with four goals (scored two against SJ and one each vs. Charlotte and East Carolina). Senior midfielder Caryn Blood is second on the team in points, behind Termini, with four (1g, 2a). In between the posts for the Blue Hens is sophomore Lindsay Shover. The netminder has started all four matches, made 15 saves, allowed four goals and inked one shutout.
NC State holds a 10-3-4 advantage all-time over the George Mason Patriots. The last time the two teams met in 2001 resulted in a 3-2 Wolfpack victory at Method Road. GMU is currently 3-0-1 with solid wins over Virginia Tech (4-2), La Salle (3-2 ot) and Georgetown (2-1 ot) and a tie versus UNC Greensboro (0-0). The squad has taken three of its four matches into overtime. Sophomore midfielders Amy Sorenson and Amy Alecci each have scored twice to lead the team. Freshman forward Rachel Wiggins leads the team with two assists, in addition to her one goal. Junior Sarah Coughlin has started all four games in the net for the Patriots. She has made 15 saves and allowed five goals.
For the Wolfpack, senior forward Lindsey Underwood has captained her way to five goals and three assists, which ranks her second in the Atlantic Coast Conference in points (13) and goals scored (5). Junior forward Erin Griswold leads NC State with four assists. Sophomore Kim Selz has been the starting keeper all four games and tallied 14 saves with six goals allowed.
The Pack returns home to Method Road on Friday, Sept. 19, for a 4:30 p.m., match versus Campbell.
