RALEIGH, N.C.--- The NC State women's soccer team wrapped up its preseason play with the final of two exhibition matches. The Wolfpack fell to the visiting Tribe of William & Mary, 2-0 on Saturday, Aug. 23, at Method Road Soccer Stadium.
Freshman midfielder Katie Hogwood scored the game winner from 15 feet after lobbing the ball over Wolfpack sophomore netminder Kim Selz in the 27th minute. Hogwood's goal came off of a breakaway as she touched the ball over the charging Selz, who came out from between the posts to cut off the angle. Selz recorded two saves on the day in 27 minutes in goal.
"All in all we played very well and I was happy with the chances we created for ourselves in the first half," Wolfpack coach Laura Kerrigan remarked.
Tara Flint tallied the second goal of the half for William & Mary off of a direct kick from the left side at 36:00. The senior midfielder fired the ball around the wall and into the net, just over the outstretched reach of keeper Lauren Georges, who also recorded a save in the match.
"It was unfortunate that we gave up a silly foul outside of the box," Kerrigan said. "William & Mary got a free kick and it resulted in their second goal."
NC State's offense created 17 shots with five coming on goal. However, no shots found the back of the net, as William & Mary senior keeper Nikki Villott made three saves in over 75 minutes between the posts, with Jenna Sommer, a sophomore, posting two saves in almost 15 minutes of work. Freshmen midfielders Carol Tognetti (5) and Anna Helenius (4), along with sophomore midfielder Lindsey DeLorenze (2), each recorded multiple shots against the Tribe.
Coach Kerrigan played all 23 of the Wolfpack's healthy players on the roster, with 11 true freshmen gaining valuable game minutes. Freshman goalkeeper Megan Connors played just over 27 minutes, recording two saves and allowing no goals to close out the match for NC State.
"We were able to get all of our players into the game and they created opportunities throughout the match," Kerrigan said. "We saw a lot of our players play well today.
"The two preseason games went well for us overall," Kerrigan said. "Now, we turn our attention towards the regular season."
The women's soccer team will start the regular season in the College of Charleston Tournament Aug. 29 & 30.
