RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State head women's basketball coach Kay Yow has announced that Johnnie Harris has joined the Wolfpack coaching staff and will serve as an assistant coach. Harris, a native of Pine Bluff, Ark., comes to NC State after serving two years as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator with the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith and one year with the University of Arkansas-Little Rock.
"Coach Harris is a passionate, committed and driven recruiter who fits in perfectly with our staff and our program," said Yow. "Her life experiences, in addition to coaching, will enable her to come in and hit the ground running. She has what it takes to help build a championship caliber team and we are fortunate to have her."
Harris has been coaching women's basketball since 1998 when she began as a graduate assistant with UA-Little Rock. After two seasons as a GA, she was promoted to assistant coach with the Trojans. In 2001, she accepted the assistant coach/recruiting coordinator position with UA-Fort Smith. Under the tutelage of head coach Loius Whorton, Harris and the staff guided the team to an impressive 26-2 record last season.
"It's a dream come true becoming an assistant coach with one of the top Division I basketball programs in the nation," said Harris. "I feel very comfortable with the staff and the players and I expect to come in and contribute to their goals as a program. I am excited to get out there and promote NC State women's basketball."
In 1996, Harris earned her bachelor of business administration degree from Arkansas Baptist College. Harris has two children: Marcus (18) and Kiera (12).
Coach Yow, associate head coach Stephanie Glance, assistant coach Jenny Palmateer and Harris welcome an incoming class of six newcomers to the 2003-04 squad.
