RALEIGH, N.C. - Justin Walters and Jason Moon lead NC State to a 15th place showing at the NCAA Championships May 27-30, and now the talented senior duo have earned All-American honors for their play. Moon finished the 2003 NCAA Championship in 10th place, never falling out of the top-10 over four rounds at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Okla. Walters earned his second straight All-America nod, and also was named a GCAA All-American Division I scholar for the second time.
Moon has competed in three NCAA Championships and he finished his career sixth all-time in stroke average in school history with a mark of 73.4. The native of Australia capped off his senior season in style, finishing in the top-20 at the ACC Championship and fifth at the NCAA Central Regional before his finish in the NCAA Championship. Moon was in fifth after the first round, 3rd after two round and ninth after the third round.
Justin Walters has been brilliant over his brief but productive two year, Wolfpack career. He has won three individual tournament titles, holds the No. 3 and No. 4 single season stroke average marks, and finished his career second all-time in career stroke average behind 1997 ACC Player of the Year and PGA Tour pro Tim Clark. Walters, like Clark, is originally from South Africa and he played two seasons at Huntingdon (Ala.) College, winning the 2001 NAIA National Championship and was a two-time NAIA All-American in 2000-2001. Walters, with his selection to the 2003 PING All-American team, has been selected to an All-American team in each of his four years on the collegiate level.
Walters became just the six NC State golfer to receive All-America Scholar recognition in two seasons, and he was a finalist for the Byron Nelson Award for outstanding academic and athletic achievement over a golfer's career. Walters, who majored in business management, was also a semi-finalist for the 2003 Ben Hogan Award, awarded to the nations top amateur and collegiate golfer.
