RALEIGH, N.C. - Freshman pitchers Joey Devine and Michael Rogers made it 2-for-2 on Tuesday when both were named to Baseball America's 2003 Freshman All-America team. Both were named first team Freshman All-Americans by the Durham-based publication.
Devine and Rogers, who are the second pair of NC State freshmen to be named Freshman All-Americans in the last five years, were both named first-team Freshman All-Americans a week ago by Collegiate Baseball magazine. In addition, Devine, a true freshman from Junction City, Kansas, was named a second-team All-American by InsideCollegeBaseball.com website earlier this week. Rogers, a redshirt-freshman from Hamilton, N.J., was an honorable-mention All-American by the same website. Devine, a first-team All-ACC selection, while Rogers was a second-team all-conference pick.
Devine went 6-3 with a 2.19 ERA and an ACC freshman-record 14 saves. He missed tying the NC State single-season record for saves by one this season. Devine did tie the school record with 36 total appearances on the mound. He worked 65-2/3 innings while allowing 49 hits, walking 16 and striking out 78.
Rogers, meanwhile, was 12-3 with a 3.02 ERA. He is only the third NC State pitcher ever to win 12 games or more in a single season, joining Matt Donahue (1991 and '92) and Brett Black (1997). Rogers pitched 125 innings, allowed 122 hits, walked 34 and struck out 113. Rogers pitched the third-most innings ever in a season by an NC State pitcher (Donahue worked more in both '91 and '92), and recorded the sixth-most strikeouts.
The Baseball America awards continue this week with the announcement on Wednesday of its College Player of the Year, and on Thursday of its College All-America teams.
